I just re-evaluated and repacked my “go bag” a couple of weeks ago. I have everything on the list except I have no tape (other than what’s in my IFAK.) Will fix that problem right away.
I have duplicates of everything on the list. However, we just moved and in the process did a LOT of downsizing getting rid of every non-essential. Therefore, I don’t have a lot to trade…after all, “One is none and two is one.” So I may have some loaners when the SHTF.
I have completed my inventory of the Go-Bag. The things that I don’t have are:
IFAK, ( because I have not found the right one)
Binoculars
Looking for suggestions on the IFAK
I have printed the list and will put it with my bug-out bag. I do not have a IFAK or the Paracord-will work on it immediately..
Maintain a go bag for every person in the household and is kept in our vehicles at all times. Inventoried monthly and water and snacks are cycled out. All items on the list are in the adult bags as well as a change of clothes, personal hygiene gear, emergency blabnkets and water filter devices. Children’s go bags are minus some items such as knives and fire starting items. I always have extra folding knives, lighters, tape, gloves, eye and ear protection(earplugs) if anyone forgets theirs.
Have everything on the list except a bandana. I have also included a MRE as well as other items deemed necessary. @ Diane, I have several hundred feet of paracord in black, and can easily pull off some for you.
I also have included a life straw, removes 99.9999 % of bacteria from water, a Baofeng radio with a spare battery.
I have a 2nd go bag which is my Comm’s go bag, which includes 2 Radio’s, 2 spare batteries for said radios, ac to dc power converter, battery chargers for ac/dc, J-Pole portable antenna with 25′ coax, laptop/tablet with 2 spare batteries, EMP proof protectors for all electronic devices, waterproof case, 2 flashlights, 1 with 90 degree head and red light capable, band frequency plan chart with phonetic and Morse codes, maps, and other items associated with comm’s.
I put all the items on the list into a North Face bicycle bag that I bought from a Craigslist seller for about 20% of the cost of a new one. In it I have a Nalgene 2 Liter bladder for water.
The IFAK I have is from a gun-show guy, and it has most of the things on Doc’s list.
Stuff I want to add that are not on the list are extra mags for my every-day carry pistol. I am thinking 2 mags, loaded and 20 rounds extra.
Finally, I took a look at my bug-out bag and discovered that some tinned meat had sprung a leak. It ruined the duck tape I had in the bag with it, and I’d only have eaten the other food in there if I was really hungry and had not discovered it. On the plus side, I had these cans in a heavy zippered bag and it kept the mess contained.
New rule – everything gets its own zippered bag. #LearnFromMyFail
Our unit Medic did a great job putting together a list for our Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) – download the list here: http://momil32.com/improved-first-aid-kit-ifak/
Paracord: I will peel off a couple 25′ pieces from my roll and keep it with my Go-Bag. If you see me and you don’t have paracord yet, com ask and I’ll sell you chunk for a buck.
Hearing Protection – good idea – I will throw a couple pairs of spongies in the bag.
Good idea Frank on the maps and charts. I also keep a solar charger and a USB charger that plugs into it for the baofeng radios. It was about 20 dollars for the solar unit and 15 for the charger off of Amazon. Both weigh very little. I can plug into the car or the solar to keep batteries charged when away from the house or vehicles. Just need a little sun.
