Fitness – Training of the Week 3/25/16

Fitness is a key component of readiness. Are you fit enough to serve your community in the event of an emergency?

The US Army’s Physical Readiness Test is comprised of sit-ups, push-ups and a 2 mile run.  The number of repetitions and the speed with which you finish 2 miles will determine your score.

Visit this link Army Basic Training PFT. Find the expected score for your age group and report your findings. Assess your personal fitness level. Walk/run if you need too. Determine your score and come up with a plan to improve it!

  1. FINALLY, we seniors are rewarded for our long lives and experience, as the requirements are adjusted for age.

The Army apparently has removed the stretching part of their fitness programs. I think this is a huge mistake, because proper stretching before exercise has been proven over and over to lessen the chances of injury. For us militiamen, most of whom are not quite as young and fit as new Army recruits, stretching is even more important. Don’t forget the stretching both before and after your workouts! If you only have time for one, be sure to do it BEFORE!

  2. I’m 73 years old but I don’t see a scale for my age. My first attempt I did 10 push-ups and 23 sit ups. I will work on that and I’m sure that I can improve it. I’ll attempt a run later when I have the space and time.

  3. Doc, you could not be more correct about stretching! I do focus on ballistic stretching before exercises because it also acts as a warm up, then after a workout while the muscles are nice and warm I focus on static stretching.

Jeff I’m proud of you ! 73 and getting it done ! That’s awesome .

On my Facebook there are some workouts that require very little equipment if any but take a look if you want and you guys are more than welcome to ask any questions . I maybe able to help you a long with fitness goals .

  4. Also I know this is not about fitness but I tried last week to listen in with ham radio to oathgroup out of st charles and could not get anything. Also I was wondering if we were still organizing a weekly ham radio check with members that live near us , haven’t heard anything since I sent out my info for location let me know please.

    Thanks Kris Coffin

  5. Thanks guys. I was in New Mexico for work and came home with one hell of a chest infection. I will take the test once i am a little more recovered. We can do this as a group sometime too.

  6. Dang, I am afraid to respond to this one as about 65% of the time I am lucky to be mobile at all at the present time. Right now the extent of my excersize is walking, period. I agree that stretching is great, and while eating potassium pills and fighting muscle cramps at the same time seems to be my thing currently, I have been working with a cardiologist and a neurologist to figure out some issues I am having and get them corrected. I may be down but I am not out! Have been carrying my go bag and Comm’s bag around from time to time trying to get used to the weight, figuring a quick trip into the woods behind the house some day might be in order, may not make it to far, so I have a small high spot picked out with good cover, never know!

  7. update: today 3/29/2016 IMproved seat up 25 and pushups 15 Still sounds girly but Iam working on it.
