Militia members are encouraged to attain their ham radio license. Ham radios are the communications device of choice in the field as they can provide both short and long range communication in times of crisis.
One of the challenges facing members in getting their license from the FCC is the time commitment for training. Classes can be an entire weekend, plus the need to study with books and flash cards.
A member of the 3/2 used Ham Test Online (see hamradiolicenseexam.com) to prepare for the test. The member reports that after investing an hour or two every other day for a week he was able to pass the test with a 100%. Per the member:
It was not exactly easy, but it wasn’t hard, either. You read a text that explains a concept like how to determine resistance and answer a multiple choice question about it. You will answer the same question often throughout the course. If you miss a question, it will repeat that question more often than others until you answer it correctly consistently.
The questions are EXACTLY the same on the test, so there is almost no way to fail. By the time I took the test, it was a breeze.
Cost is $24.95 for a subscription that will allow you to study for 2 years, though this member reports that he was ready to take the exam in just a week and a half. Studying for the General is an additional $29.95, and the Extra Class is an additional $34.95.
