Most Missouri Militia units use the Baofeng UV5R for field communications. It is an affordable, tough radio. Check out the videos below. The first is a torture test for the UV5R, the second details a comms go-bag.

If you are buying these they sell them in multi packs for even less than a single radio. Might not be a bad idea to have spare or two. Nothing else is as versatile and an entry level HAM handheld runs $150- you can get 3 of these for less.
Learned a lot…..wish I could afford to add more to my comms kit but it Wil be a while before I get a jpole
I would recommend one of these, you have to get the sma connector to fit on the Baofeng. Fairly inexpensive at 29 bucks.

I just equipped my home and car. I mounted an Yaesu FT-2900R 75W in an ammo can with a sealed lead acid battery and a j-pole. This is a mobile unit that I will use for home and maybe some training events. I would prefer to mount a 6 ft antenna on my house but not sure what to get or how to mount it. I also purchased a Yaesu FTM-3100R 65W in my car with a nice mag mount 4ft antenna. I am planning on getting the programming software for both radios and program the 2 meter channels from the baofeng’s into them along with a bunch of other repeaters.
