Militia units are issued SOI sheets. This sheet will contain a system of common communications and codes associated with those common communications. For instance, a request for a SALUTE report may be transmitted simply as SHERMAN. An ORP may be reported as MADISON.
The purpose of these codes are to:
- Obscure the meaning of communications in the field to anyone who does not have the SOI, such as an opposing force intercepting an unencrypted communication.
- Save time by substituting longer instructions for a single word
- Improve clarity in communications.
Receiving Codes
When a unit recognizes that it is being called by another element (Command, or perhaps a nearby unit) a member on the team should quickly prepare to write down notes as to what is being sent. When ready, acknowledge the call and give the go ahead.
Write down the codes being transmitted, and immediately decode. Acknowledge that you understand and carry out the orders.
Sending Codes
Prepare to communicate with another element by making brief, meaningful notes, including the codes for the message you wish to send. Call the element, and when you are given the go-ahead to transmit, send your message. Wait to receive acknowledgement of the message before continuing.
