IDPA Lessons – Training of the Week 4/29/16

Here are some key IDPA lessons learned at a recent event.

You must be able to manipulate your firearm! Many people stumbled when they were front and center with a timer. Imagine how difficult it would be in a real life shooting situation. If you carry a gun that requires a manual safety it needs to be second nature. Several members missed releasing their safety, some more than once. Clearly in a combat situation this would render you a sitting duck.

Practice

  1. Produce your empty handgun from its holster, deactivate the safety and pull the trigger. Cycle the weapon and re-holster. x100
  2. From your mag pouches change magazines in your gun. Practice both dropping the empty mag and retaining it (tactical reload). x50
  3. Field strip and reassemble your weapon. x10
  4. Field strip your weapon with your eyes closed x10

If you cannot do these things easily at home you are wasting ammo going to the range.

Challenge

  1. Present your weapon, dry fire, change mag, cycle, dry fire and re-holster. Post time
  2. Field strip & reassemble your pistol, including a function check with eyes closed. Post time
