HAM Radio – Oath Keepers Net – Training of the Week 4/1/16

One of our unit goals is to get all members licensed as HAM radio operators. In addition to giving us a means of communicating in the event of an emergency, the training to get a license will help an individual understand the basics of how a radio net works and how they are managed.

  1. CORRECTION – Get on the Oath Keepers net this Thursday night (4/7) at 8pm. The repeater is located on the water tower in downtown St. Charles.
    1. Frequency is 145.330. You need a HAM license to speak but anyone can listen.
    2. In the comments post the AmRRON net word of the week.
    3. If you have tried before and cannot hear the net, travel closer to St. Charles or change up your equipment to try and get reception.
  2. Take an online practice test for the next level HAM license (if you have a tech take General, if you don’t have a license take the Tech, Generals take Extra). Post your score in the comments.
  3. Keep working on PT from last week. Post improvements. We will do this as a group at an upcoming training.

  1. Quick note: The UV-6R is about to release. Amazon is selling the UV-5R for 2 radio’s and the normal items that come with them for under $24 for both. Free shipping if your willing to wait on them. Great deal!

  2. After the regular Oath Keepers net on the St. Charles repeater, we always do a short and sweet simplex net to test our capabilities using simplex (radio to radio without using a repeater.) During a SHTF or prolonged grid-down situation the repeaters may be down, and simplex may be our only option. This simplex test will take place immediately after the regular net on the repeater is closed. The simplex frequency we use is 146.420 (no offset.)

  3. just go to Amazon.com and do a search for the Baofeng UV-5R. There are several links listed under $24 for a package of 2 radios. They include the bases and chargers, earpieces and mikes, stock antennas which really should be upgraded at some point to the Nagoya-771’s, and standard rechargeable batteries.
The Oath Keeper Net is the first and third Thursday of the month, in April this will be the 7th and the 21st, not March 31. Confirmed this today with John Behr, head of the Oath Keeper Comm’s group.

  4. Listened in on the net on Thursday 4/7. Heard Doc mobile on 44 check in and I believe Frank as well. Had one radio set up using JPole and the other using just the whip antenna. Clear signals on both from Grid Square EM48ro according to map. Next time I will listen in from my rural location. Plan on testing work location and mobile as well at some time so I know all are successful.
